A Kashmir Shaivism Inspired Overview of Intuition, Inner Vision, and Discerning Awareness
In the commonly known 7-chakra system, the Third Eye Chakra, Ājñā in Sanskrit, is understood as the center of inner sight, intuitive wisdom, and discerning awareness. We suggest that it may be seen as the threshold between the personal and the transpersonal, where the mind begins to see not merely with the eyes of the body but with the eye of awareness itself. When Ājñā is open, perception may become clarified. We may see patterns beneath the surface of experience, trust the inner voice, and engage the creative power of imagination with confidence and depth.
The word Ājñā is often translated as "command" or "perceiving beyond." Anodea Judith in Anodea Judith's Chakra Yoga aligns the third eye chakra with observation and the element Light. Mark S. G. Dyczkowski writes in The Doctrine of Vibration that in the recognition (pratyabhijñā) school of Kashmir Shaivism, consciousness is said to have two aspects: Light and Awareness. These are called Prakāśa and Vimarśa, the Divine Light of Consciousness and the reflective awareness this Light has of its own nature, together constitute the all-embracing fullness (pūrṇatā) of consciousness. Absolute consciousness understood as the unchanging ontological ground of all appearing is termed: Prakāśa. As the creative awareness of its own Being, the absolute is called: Vimarśa.
Śiva is this light of awareness itself, the luminous Self-illuminating ground from which all perception arises. We suggest that the Third Eye, inspired by this tradition, may be understood as the organ of perceiving that inner light, the place where we "see" into the essence nature of reality. Inspired by The Yoga of Netra Tantra by Bettina Bäumer, we suggest that by Opening of the third eye, also called the eye of wisdom, we may overcome a dualistic vision and open up to a unitary insight.
In Tantra Illuminated, Christopher D. Wallis mentions Pratibhā, a word that simultaneously means "intuitive insight", "creative inspiration", and "natural instinct." Inspired by teachings of Kashmir Shaivism on the four levels of speech, we suggest as a direct movement of the higher levels, or subtler levels, of consciousness into our conscious field of awareness. When the Third Eye is open, inspired by David Frawley's suggestions in Tantric Yoga and the Wisdom Goddesses one aligns the mind with Self and comes to have a continual stream of Divine perceptions. Building on this, we suggest that Pratibhā may arise more naturally and more frequently. Synchronicities may be noticed. We recognize the symbolic guidance that Dreams may carry. Clarity may arrive in moments of stillness. When there are contractions in the Ājñā field, you may find it challenging to receive intuitive insight through the clouds of thought, and feel limited in your connection with this deeper knowing. The inner voice may be cluttered by the noise of mental activity. Visualization may feel challenging. Perception may remain at the surface of things.
We suggest that the Third Eye Chakra may be seen as the place where the trust of inner knowing is deepened, where the creative power of inner vision is cultivated, and where mental clarity and discerning awareness are refined.
Below are the three core themes integrated for the Third Eye Chakra, each distilled from the full-length articles.
Inspired by Kashmir Shaivism, we suggest that intuition may be understood as the natural Self-recognition of consciousness, felt as inner knowing when the mind becomes transparent enough to let it shine through. When the Third Eye is open in its intuitive dimension, we may trust the subtle signals of inner knowing. We may discern the difference between fear and true intuitive guidance. We may receive flashes of insight and feel connected to a wisdom that exceeds the ordinary thinking mind.
The assessment in this theme aims to reveal how freely your intuitive faculty flows, how much you trust your inner knowing, and how deeply you feel attuned to the subtler signals of consciousness moving through you.
Inspired by the view of Kashmir Shaivism, the imagination may be understood as the creative power of consciousness expressing itself through the faculty of inner vision. The Tantric tradition honors the imagination not as mere fantasy but as a primary vehicle through which awareness meets, shapes, and heals experience. When the Third Eye is open in its imaginative dimension, visualization may become vivid, purposeful, and we deepen our alignment with its energetic potency.
The assessment in this theme aims to reveal how freely your imaginative faculty flows, how vividly you engage inner imagery, and how consciously you draw on the creative power of visualization in your daily life and inner practice.
Inspired by the Kashmir Shaivism teaching on Pratyabhijñā, the recognition of one's own nature, we suggest that mental clarity is not merely a cognitive achievement. It may be understood as what naturally remains when the veils of limited perception are dissolved. When the Third Eye is open in its perceptive dimension, we may see patterns clearly, hold the bigger picture with ease, and rest in the silent awareness between thoughts without effort.
The assessment in this theme aims to reveal how clearly you perceive, how comfortably you discern, and how naturally you rest in the quiet spaciousness of witnessing awareness.
Inspired by the Kashmir Shaivism tradition, we suggest that contractions in the Third Eye Chakra may arise from the three malas, the veils of ignorance.
This veil may create an experience in which we perceive limited inherent wisdom and limited trustworthiness of our own inner knowing. Intuition, imagination, and clear perception may not feel recognized as qualities of our essence nature.
This veil may create an experience in which we perceive limited access to the deeper intelligence that pervades all of reality. The universal wisdom that the Third Eye may attune to may feel distant rather than recognized as continuous with our own awareness.
This veil may create an experience in which we perceive limited freedom in how we see and respond to our experience. Acting from the clarity of inner knowing, trusting the visions and insights that arise within us, and resting in the stillness of discerning awareness may feel challenging, when we experience limited recognition of the auspicious intelligence at work in the unfolding of our lives.
We invite you, not to see these limited perceptions as flaws. We suggest to see them as reflections of what we carry within us. They may be seen as Samskaras, stuck emotions and misaligned beliefs, waiting to be recognized. When met and embraced from a place of knowing, unconditional love and acceptance, they may stream again and dissolve.
How Chakralytics offers to support the opening of the Third Eye Chakra
Chakras are commonly known as seven main energy centers that shape our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. While interpretations vary across traditions, we find that this sevenfold framework may offer a powerful lens for Self-awareness and energetic harmonization. Chakralytics seeks to honor and adapt this ancient system for contemporary Self-awareness and energetic insight.
By intuitive Self-assessments, Chakralytics generates a dynamic snapshot of your chakra system, according to the Chakralytics Framework. From root to crown. In this way you may discover which centers are thriving, which may need attention, and how your energy evolves over time. Each individual Chakra Assessment focuses on three major themes of our lived experience.
The Chakra Sadhana Course provides a twice daily practice designed to deepen Self-Alignment and to meet, embrace and dissolve stuck energy. Through devotion, Self-love, acceptance, and visualization, you are invited to embrace and dissolve contractions, Samskaras, stuck emotions, and misaligned beliefs that may be limiting the natural clarity and depth of your inner sight and intuitive knowing.
A curated library of texts for deepening Self-understanding. Works such as Tantra Illuminated, The Recognition Sutras, and Vijñāna Bhairava Tantra may help deepen the understanding of perception, inner light, and the contemplative practices that may support the natural opening of Third Eye awareness.
Personal guidance aimed to support you in feeling Self-empowered to navigate patterns that limit your perceived mental clarity and trust in intuition. A skilled guide may help you in suggesting ways and practices that may support developing deeper trust in your inner knowing and the natural clarification of your perception and your inner vision.
Inspired by the Kashmir Shaivism view, we suggest when the Third Eye Chakra, Ājñā, is free, intuition may arise as a natural movement of consciousness recognizing itself. Visualization may become a living instrument of transformation. Perception may become spacious, clear, and rooted in the stillness that is the ground of all awareness.
