Crown Chakra: Spiritual Awareness and Unity

A Kashmir Shaivism Inspired Perspective on Opening to the Higher Intelligence Within

12 min readSpiritual Awareness and Unity

In the commonly known 7-chakra system, the Crown Chakra holds the dimension of spiritual awareness: that quality of consciousness that knows itself as part of something larger, something luminous and all-pervading. When Sahasrāra is open in its dimension of spiritual awareness, we suggest that we may experience a felt sense of unity with a greater intelligence that moves through all of life. We may feel harmonized with the universe, guided by an invisible wisdom, and oriented naturally toward the sacred dimension of ordinary experience. We propose to see the spiritual awareness of the Crown as a living quality of perception, a way of being present to life in which the deeper ground of consciousness is directly felt.

Based on Mark Dyczkowski's explanation in his course about the context and history of the Vijñānabhairava Tantra, we suggest that there are countless opportunities, in fact every perception, every feeling, every emotion, positive emotion, negative emotion, intense emotion, what you hear, what you see, what you taste, what you touch. Anything and everything that constitutes experience, if you can analyze it, is an experience, is an occasion to move beyond thought constructs into the primal, original, fundamental consciousness within which all these experiences, whatever they are, shine and manifest, and that you experience this as god consciousness.

According to Anodea Judith in Anodea Judith's Chakra Yoga, the crown chakra is the center of cosmic consciousness, that unites us with divine intelligence and the source of all manifestation. When the Crown is open, we may experience this divine intelligence as a tangible power and that every experience, every breath, and every moment lies in the peaceful, quiescent ground in which all exists.

When Sahasrāra is contracted in its dimension of spiritual awareness, we may feel limited in our access to this field. Life may feel random, mechanical, or empty of deeper meaning. The sense of being guided or supported by something greater may feel distant. Meditation may feel challenging. The moments of Bliss or unity that the Crown may naturally provide may seem rare or unavailable.

This article explores Spiritual Awareness and Unity through the Crown Chakra using the Chakralytics framework, integrating classical Tantric insight with compassionate Self-inquiry. It is aimed to offer a grounded path toward deepening the felt sense of connection to the higher intelligence that is already present within you and within all of life.

    The Data of Inquiry

Three Dimensions of the Crown Chakra, Spiritual Awareness and Unity, Energy Landscape

Your assessment responses within the theme of Spiritual Awareness and Unity are aimed to reveal how your Crown Chakra energy expresses itself across three dimensions. These dimensions may help you understand how consciousness is currently reflecting itself through your spiritual awareness, your sense of unity with the greater field, and your capacity to receive and integrate spiritual insight.

Dimension 1: Opening to a Higher Intelligence

    Assessment questions:

    • I experience a deep sense of unity with something greater than myself.
    • I feel harmonized with universal energies.
    • I recognize moments of pure awareness without thought.
    • I experience inner peace when I embrace silence.
    • I am open to spiritual guidance from my higher self.
    • I feel guided by an invisible wisdom in my life.

This dimension aims to reveal the quality of your basic orientation toward the higher intelligence of the universal field. Whether you feel a living connection to something greater than the personal self, whether you can recognize the moments of pure awareness that arise in silence, and whether you experience yourself as receiving guidance from a wisdom that exceeds the ordinary thinking mind: these questions aim to illuminate the foundational openness of your Crown to the spiritual dimension of experience. From the view of Kashmir Shaivism, this recognition is seen as the natural revelation of consciousness when the veils of contraction have thinned.

The Vijñāna Bhairava Tantra, one of the central texts of the Trika tradition, offers 112 practices for awakening to the fundamental ground of consciousness. According to Mark Dyczkowski, the Vijñānabhairava Tantra (Dyczkowski) describes how many of these practices involve precisely this quality of orientation, contemplating the centre between things: resting in the space between breaths, the silence between thoughts, the emptiness in which all experience arises. We suggest that the capacity to recognize these moments of pure awareness may serve as a gateway of Crown opening.

Dimension 2: Unity Consciousness and Surrender

    Assessment questions:

    • I see the bigger picture beyond my daily existence.
    • I experience moments of unity with all living beings.
    • I realize that my consciousness is more than my personal identity.
    • I let go of control and surrender to the unknown.
    • I often experience moments of Bliss.
    • I feel a flowing stream of cosmic energy through my body.

This dimension aims to reveal the depth of your capacity for experiencing unity consciousness and spiritual surrender. The ability to see beyond the immediate horizon of daily existence, to experience moments of genuine Self-recognition in your lived experience, and to recognize that your individual consciousness is held within something far larger: these are qualities of Crown awareness that arise when the contraction of the personal self begins to relax. In Kashmir Shaivism, the state of Śiva-consciousness is described as a condition of all embracing fullness, Pūrṇatā, in which the sense of lack that ordinarily motivates the personal ego is dissolved in the recognition of essential completeness.

Moments of Bliss and the felt flow of cosmic energy through the body are spoken of in the Spanda tradition as direct intimations of this fullness. In Kashmir Shaivism, consciousness is not seen as Emptiness alone, but as Full Emptiness. According to Christopher Wallis in Tantra Illuminated, consciousness is full with the powers or Śaktis of: Cit-Śakti, the power of consciousness; Ānanda-Śakti, the power of Bliss; Icchā-Śakti, the power of Will or Creative impulse; Jñāna-Śakti, the power of Knowing; Kriyā-Śakti, the power of Action; and the all-important meta-power, Svātantrya-Śakti, the power of Freedom.

Dimension 3: Spiritual Insight and Inner Deepening

    Assessment questions:

    • I acknowledge the underlying unity in all diverse forms.
    • I experience my thoughts as transient and non-identifying.
    • I receive insights that go beyond my usual way of thinking.
    • I experience an ever-deepening understanding of my spiritual essence.
    • I naturally rest in the fundamental ground of consciousness in which all experiences shine and manifest.

This dimension aims to reveal the maturity of your spiritual insight and the depth of the ongoing inner journey. The capacity to recognize thoughts as transient movements within a field of awareness in which these arise and dissolve, to receive insights that go beyond the ordinary categories of the mind, and to sense the ever-deepening quality of the spiritual journey: we suggest that these are signs of an open Crown Chakra.

Inspired by Christopher Wallis in Tantra Illuminated, we suggest that in Kashmir Shaivism, the recognition of unity in diversity in our daily life is seen as a direct perception of the nature of consciousness and is called Parāparā: She is the second Goddess in the Trika school and stands for the realization that all life experiences are nothing but an emanation of the Nectar-Sweet, beautiful, soothing Parā-devī, the Supreme Goddess.

A Kashmir Shaivism Perspective on Spiritual Awareness

From the Kashmir Shaivism tradition has been said that it offers one of the most refined philosophical accounts of spiritual awareness in the history of Indian thought. At its center is the principle of Anuttara: the unsurpassable, the ground of all experience that cannot be transcended because it is already the source of everything. Abhinavagupta, from whom is said to be the greatest exponent of the tradition, understood all spiritual experience as a form of Śiva recognizing Itself within the play of Its own appearance. Spiritual awareness, from this view, is the very nature of consciousness, gradually recognizing itself through the unfoldment of the individual human or sentient being's experience.

According to Mark Dyczkowski, in the Vijñānabhairava Tantra, there is a virtually dominant presence of Emptiness, both as a means and the goal in many meditations. Having experienced that the mind has merged into the Supreme Void of Śiva Consciousness, by resting there and being penetrated by the Supreme Brahman, one attains the Brahman itself. Thus the Vijñānabhairava Tantra teaches that one should meditate on one's own Self in the form of the Sky. In this way, the thinking, or savikalpa, mind, samana, that perceives physical or mental space turns into the thought-free, or nirvikalpa, mind, unmana, that perceives the inner space of consciousness, the essential nature of the Self, which is the Bhairava's nature, his state, power and radiant form.

Inspired by Kashmir Shaivism teachings, we suggest that the cultivation of spiritual awareness is therefore an act of Self-recognition. When we embrace and move through obstacles and allow the veils to this recognition to dissolve, we may naturally ground ourselves in our essence nature.

Practical Supportive Suggestions for Spiritual Awareness and Unity

These practices are aimed to honor Svātantrya, the innate freedom of your being, and to support the natural deepening of your felt unity with the higher intelligence that is already present within you.

    1. The Presence of the Greater Field

We suggest taking the time to simply sit and feel the space in which you exist. Not concentrating on any object, not following any train of thought, simply resting in the open awareness that is already present. Over time, this simple practice may begin to deepen the lived sense of the greater field as an intimate and continuous presence.

    2. Contemplating the Center Between Things

According to Mark Dyczkowski, this is a practice taught in both the Vijñānabhairava Tantra and the Spandakārikā: contemplating the center between two breaths, between two thoughts, between two perceptions, and focusing on the point where one thing ends and the other begins. With the breath, for example, this means focusing on the point where the exhalation ends and the inhalation begins. That point of silence in between is referred to as the center, the source from which experience arises and in which it dissolves.

    3. The Practice of Non-Identification with Thoughts

Experiencing thoughts as transient and non-identifying, as movements within awareness, awareness reflecting itself, reflecting patterns that we hold within, a temporary experience, rather than definitions of our absolute essence nature. We suggest practicing this recognition deliberately. During meditation or in moments of stillness, simply notice each thought as it arises and passes, without following it, without resisting it. Over time, this practice may strengthen the recognition of the awareness that holds the thoughts as something spacious and stable where we can ground ourselves in and rest in whilst all experiences of life unfold.

    4. Acknowledgement of Inner Guidance

We suggest to acknowledge and express inner gratitude for the moments in which the greater intelligence made itself known. Perhaps a synchronicity arose that felt like guidance. Perhaps there was a moment of wordless peace in which the sense of separation dissolved. Perhaps an insight arrived that went beyond the ordinary categories of the thinking mind. Honoring these moments with gratitude may serve as a signal that such openings are being recognized and welcomed and that we are open and devoted to deepening Self-alignment.

    Addressing the Root Cause

According to the Kashmir Shaivism tradition, challenges in spiritual awareness and connection may arise from the three malas, the veils of ignorance.

Āṇava-Mala: Impurity of Individuality, which may cause a limited perception of our wholeness

This veil may create an experience in which spiritual awareness feels like an exceptional state. The universal intelligence that the Crown may open toward may not be recognized as the very ground of our own consciousness, but may appear as something foreign or distant. We may feel limited in our recognition that this unity with the greater field is our nature.

Māyīya-Mala: Impurity of Differentiation, which may cause a limited perception of our underlying unity

This veil may create an experience in which the unity with all living beings and the interconnectedness of all life, which the open Crown may naturally perceive, feels obscured by a sense of separation. We may experience a limited perception of experiencing objects and events in life as the expression of a single field of consciousness. Experiences of the unity in diversity, may be not fully recognized as revelations of a deeper truth.

Kārma-Mala: Impurity of Action, which may cause a limited perception of the auspicious unfolding

This veil may create an experience in which orienting daily life toward spiritual awareness feels distant. The sense that the insights and experiences of the Crown dimension can be integrated into the fabric of ordinary action and choice may feel distant. We may receive glimpses of spiritual insight but find it challenging to allow them to genuinely shape the way we move through the world.

We suggest to see the patterns that have arisen from these limited perceptions as reflections of what we carry within us. They may be seen as Samskaras, stuck emotions and misaligned beliefs, waiting to be recognized. When met and embraced from a place of knowing, unconditional love and acceptance, they may stream again and dissolve.

    The Four Pathways of Support

How Chakralytics aims to offer support in the deepening of spiritual awareness and connection

    1. Chakralytics Self-Assessment Tool

Chakras are commonly known as seven main energy centers that shape our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. While interpretations vary across traditions, we find that this sevenfold framework may offer a powerful lens for Self-awareness and energetic harmonization. Chakralytics seeks to honor and adapt this ancient system for contemporary Self-awareness and energetic insight.

By intuitive Self-assessments, Chakralytics generates a dynamic snapshot of your chakra system, according to the Chakralytics Framework. From root to crown. In this way you may discover which centers are thriving, which may need attention, and how your energy evolves over time. Each individual Chakra Assessment focuses on three major themes of our lived experience.

    2.

The Chakra Sadhana Course provides a twice daily practice designed for Self-alignment and to meet, embrace and dissolve contractions. Through devotion, unconditional love, unconditional acceptance, and visualization, you are invited to embrace and dissolve contractions that may be limiting your natural spiritual awareness and your felt sense of connection to the greater field of consciousness that holds all of life.

    3.

A curated library of texts for deepening Self-understanding. Works such as Tantra Illuminated, The Recognition Sutras, and Vijñāna Bhairava Tantra may offer insights and practices that deepen the recognition of our essence nature and our spiritual awareness.

    4. 1-to-1 Coaching

Personal guidance aimed to support you in feeling Self-empowered to navigate patterns in which you feel contracted in your spiritual awareness, when you experience limitations in the sense that the greater intelligence of the universe is available to you, or the difficulty of maintaining the felt sense of unity amidst the demands of daily life. A skilled guide may serve as a mirror and offer practices and reflections that may support the natural deepening of your Crown awareness.

    Closing Reflection

We suggest that Spiritual Awareness and Unity are a recognition to be allowed. When the veils that limit our perception thin, we may naturally open to a higher intelligence, resting in unity consciousness and surrender, and experience a deepening into spiritual insight. We see these as facets of a single recognition that may deepen gradually as the Crown Chakra opens. A moment of pure awareness in silence. The felt sense that our individual consciousness is held within something vast and benevolent. The discovery that the insights we receive are not arriving from outside us, but are arising from the very source of what we are.
