Third Eye Chakra: Intuition and Inner Knowing

A Kashmir Shaivism Inspired Perspective on the Recognition of Inner Wisdom

8 min readIntuition and Inner Knowing

In the commonly known 7-chakra system, the Third Eye Chakra holds the faculty of intuition: that quality of inner knowing that arises from a deeper layer of consciousness beyond the thought constructs. When Ājñā is open in its intuitive dimension, we may trust the quiet signals that arise from within. We may sense the hidden meaning in a situation, feel the guidance that arrives through a dream, or receive a flash of sudden clarity that illuminates what the analytical mind could not reach on its own.

In Kashmir Shaivism, this quality of direct inner knowing is understood through the lens of Pratibhā. Christopher D. Wallis writes in Tantra Illuminated that Pratibhā simultaneously means "intuitive insight", "creative inspiration", and "natural instinct". We argue that this intuitive insight is not manufactured by thought, but is allowed to shine through from a deeper level of consciousness. We suggest, it is the intelligence of the deeper Self that makes itself known when we recognize it and allow it to come through unobstructedly.

When the Third Eye is contracted in its intuitive dimension, we may find it difficult to trust the inner signals that arise. The voice of fear may become difficult to distinguish from the voice of genuine guidance. We may find it challenging to ride on our gut feelings in our daily life, and the sense of connection to a deeper knowing may feel distant.

This article explores Intuition and Inner Knowing through the Third Eye Chakra using the Chakralytics framework, integrating classical Tantric insight with compassionate Self-inquiry. It is aimed to offer a grounded path toward deepening trust in the knowing that already lives within you.

    The Data of Inquiry

Three Dimensions of the Third Eye Chakra, Intuition and Inner Knowing, Energy Landscape

Your assessment responses within the theme of Intuition and Inner Knowing are aimed to reveal how your Third Eye Chakra energy expresses itself across three dimensions. These dimensions may help you understand how consciousness is currently reflecting itself through your intuitive faculty and your relationship with inner wisdom.

    Dimension 1: Trusting Intuitive Signals

    Assessment questions:

    • I trust my intuitive insights.
    • I recognize subtle signals from my inner knowing.
    • I follow my gut feeling when making important decisions.
    • I am open to inner messages in dreams.
    • I feel clarity when I meditate.
    • I can distinguish fear from intuition.

This dimension aims to reveal the foundational quality of your relationship with intuitive knowing: whether you trust what arises from within, whether you can recognise the subtle signals of the inner field, and whether you have developed the discernment to distinguish genuine intuitive guidance from the contractions of fear.

According to Tantra Illuminated by Christopher Wallis, from the view of the Trika school of Kashmir Shaivism, intuitive insight, or Pratibhā, is a characteristic of Parā, the Supreme Goddess, the fundamental, ever-existent, essential nature of reality. So intuition is always there for us, we may see it as natural clarity that arises from consciousness recognising itself.

Dimension 2: Symbols, Synchronicities, and the Inner Voice

    Assessment questions:

    • I interpret symbols and synchronicities in my life.
    • I regularly take time to reflect on my inner voice.
    • I feel connected to universal wisdom.
    • I let go of logic to give space to my intuition.
    • I trust my instincts when meeting new people.
    • I recognize when I ignore my inner voice.

This dimension aims to reveal the breadth and subtlety of your intuitive awareness: how openly you receive the symbolic dimension of experience, how readily you set aside purely analytical thinking when something deeper is available, and how honestly you can recognise when you have bypassed your own inner voice.

As Mark S. G. Dyczkowski describes in The Doctrine of Vibration, from the Kashmir Shaivism perspective, consciousness has two aspects. Prakāśa is seen as the absolute light of consciousness, because it makes all things manifest by shining in its universal form. The phenomena that appear in the field of consciousness are experienced directly in this way at the initial instant of perception, when they are still at one with the perceiving subject. The light of consciousness is itself this direct experience, had before thought-constructs. But although the light of consciousness accounts for the appearing of phenomena in this way, it does not fully account for our experience of them. No experience is possible without Self-awareness. Dyczkowski states that experience must be personal to be experience at all.

Dyczkowski continues: "From the Kashmiri Shaivite point of view, this reflection is an awareness of the images that appear within the mirror of the light." And explains that "this act of reflective awareness is termed 'Vimarśa'. The word is derived from the root 'mṛś' which means to touch, feel, understand, perceive, reflect or examine. Thus 'Vimarśa' is the power of consciousness by virtue of which it can understand or perceive itself, feel, reflect on and examine the events that occur within it. In short, behave like a limitless, living being. This ability to reflect on itself is inherent in the very nature of the light of consciousness; indeed it is its most specific characteristic and the very life of its sentient nature."

We may suggest that the symbols and synchronicities we encounter in daily life are expressions of this same Vimarśa, consciousness examining itself through the mirror of outer appearance. When we pause to notice a deeper meaning, read the felt sense that arises in the presence of another, or attend to the quiet pull of the inner voice, we are participating in this reflective movement of awareness. We suggest that we may be, in that moment, consciousness recognising itself.

Dimension 3: Higher Consciousness and Inner Attunement

    Assessment questions:

    • I regularly receive intuitive insights or sudden clarity.
    • I receive inspiration from my higher Self.
    • I am aware of energy flows in and around my body.
    • I feel connected to my higher consciousness during inner practices.
    • I experience mental harmony when I'm attuned to my inner Self.

This dimension aims to reveal the depth of your attunement to the subtler dimensions of consciousness. The capacity to receive inspiration from the higher Self, to sense energy flows, and to experience mental harmony through inner alignment suggests a Third Eye that is open not only at the level of ordinary cognition but at the level of energetic and transpersonal awareness.

In Kashmir Shaivism, the body is not seen as separate from consciousness. We suggest that it may be understood as an evolving field of energy, and as a teacher that is reflecting to us what we hold within. An instrument through which we may experience ourself and reflect on ourself, and deepen our Self-understanding.

Mark Dyczkowski, in The Doctrine of Vibration, describes the expansion of awareness as a process of exerting oneself to free oneself of ignorance. According to Dyczkowski, "This inner exertion is the basis of every means to liberation." When we become attuned to the energy flows in and around the body, we may find that the intuitive faculty deepens naturally. The body may become a living compass for inner knowing, supporting the mind in its orientation toward what is true.

A Kashmir Shaivism Perspective on Intuition

We suggest that the Kashmir Shaivism tradition offers a beautiful philosophical view for understanding the nature of intuitive knowing. At its center is the concept of Pratibhā, described by Christopher Wallis in Tantra Illuminated as "intuitive insight", "creative inspiration", and "natural instinct".

In The Yoga of Netra Tantra, Bettina Sharada Bäumer describes the process of how Pratibhā arises. She goes into the characteristics of the Yogī who is filled with the Śakti and, she argues, thus has the same nature as Śiva.

Bäumer cites Kṣemarāja: "by having internalized the senses, the first quality of such a Yogī, who is established in the Energy, is a knowledge of past and future." According to Bäumer, Kṣemarāja connects this attainment of omniscience related to past and future to the experience of the 'first moment' of awareness related to Tuṭipāta (descent of the Tuṭi). Bäumer explains Tuṭi as a mystical moment, but in a very precise context.

Bäumer continues by citing the work of Kallaṭa. According to Bäumer, Kallaṭa speaks of two Tuṭis as extremely subtle moments of consciousness. The first is totally pure and complete, beyond differentiation, corresponding to the state of Śiva. The second "moment", which is called Tuṭipāta, is an initial flashing-forth, corresponding to the state of Śakti in her form as Pratibhā. It is the Yogī who is "plunged in Her who knows and does everything".

Inspired by this work of Bettina Sharada Bäumer, we suggest that when we rest in our complete fullness, our essence nature, this power of omniscience or intuitive insight, Pratibhā, may arise and flow naturally.

Practical Supportive Suggestions for Intuition and Inner Knowing

These practices are aimed to honor Svātantrya, the innate freedom of your being, and to support the natural deepening of trust in the knowing that is already present within you.

    1. The Intuition Journal

In the morning or evening, we suggest recording any intuitive signals that arose during the day: a felt sense, a dream image, a moment of unexpected clarity, a synchronicity that caught your attention. Over time, a personal vocabulary of inner signals may emerge, allowing you to recognize your intuition's particular language more readily and to notice when and how it speaks.

    2. The Fear or Intuition Inquiry

When a strong inner signal arises, we suggest pausing and asking: does this feeling contract or expand? Fear tends to contract the body, constrict the breath, and loop through familiar thoughts. Genuine intuition tends to arrive with a quality of stillness, clarity, or quiet certainty, even when the message may be uncomfortable. This distinction, practiced with patience and compassion, may gradually build the discernment needed to trust the voice that speaks from inner knowing rather than from conditioning.

    3. The Dream Reflection Practice

We suggest to keep a small notebook near your bed and, upon waking, write down whatever images, feelings, or fragments of dream consciousness remain. Approach the content with curiosity rather than interpretation, allowing the symbolic language of the dreaming mind to arise naturally and to speak on its own terms. Over time, recurring themes or images may begin to illuminate aspects of the inner landscape.

    4. The Brow Center Awareness Practice

During meditation or in moments of stillness, we suggest gently bringing attention to the area between and slightly above the eyebrows, the Ājñā region. Without forcing any visualization, simply rest awareness there with an open and receptive quality. Notice whatever arises: energy, the subtle sense of inner light, or simply stillness. This practice may support the natural deepening of attunement to the Third Eye field over time.

    Addressing the Root Cause

    The Veils Behind Intuitive Contraction

According to the Kashmir Shaivism tradition, challenges in trusting intuition and inner knowing may arise from the three malas, the veils of ignorance.

Āṇava-Mala: Impurity of Individuality, which may cause a limited perception of our wholeness

This veil may create an experience in which we perceive limited inherent wisdom and limited trustworthiness of the inner insights that arise. Intuition may not feel recognized as a quality of our essence nature, and the value of the inner voice may not yet be fully acknowledged.

Māyīya-Mala: Impurity of Differentiation, which may cause a limited perception of our underlying unity

This veil may create an experience in which we perceive limited connection to the deeper universal intelligence through which intuition flows. We may not yet fully recognize the resonances in all experiences we have, that these experiences may be perceived as teachers reflecting what is held within. And therefore not yet fully recognize the value of every experience. As Christopher D. Wallis describes in Tantra Illuminated, the recognition that anything can be for a Blessing.

Kārma-Mala: Impurity of Action, which may cause a limited perception of the auspicious unfolding

This veil may create an experience in which we perceive limited freedom to act from our inner knowing. Trusting the guidance of the inner voice in important decisions may feel challenging when we do not recognize the auspicious intelligence at work in the unfolding of our lives.

We suggest to see the patterns that have arisen from these limited perceptions as reflections of what we carry within us. They may be seen as Samskaras, stuck emotions and misaligned beliefs, waiting to be recognized. When met and embraced from a place of knowing, unconditional love and acceptance, they may stream again and dissolve.

    The Four Pathways of Support

How Chakralytics aims to offer support in the deepening of intuitive trust and inner knowing

    1. Chakralytics Self-Assessment Tool

Chakras are commonly known as seven main energy centers that shape our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. While interpretations vary across traditions, we find that this sevenfold framework may offer a powerful lens for Self-awareness and energetic harmonization. Chakralytics seeks to honor and adapt this ancient system for contemporary Self-awareness and energetic insight.

By intuitive Self-assessments, Chakralytics generates a dynamic snapshot of your chakra system, according to the Chakralytics Framework. From root to crown. In this way you may discover which centers are thriving, which may need attention, and how your energy evolves over time. Each individual Chakra Assessment focuses on three major themes of our lived experience.

    2.

The Chakra Sadhana Course provides a twice daily practice designed for Self-alignment and to meet, embrace and dissolve stuck energy. Through devotion, Self-love, acceptance, and visualization, you are invited to embrace and dissolve contractions that may be limiting the natural flow of your intuitive knowing and your trust in the inner voice.

    3.

A curated library of texts for deepening Self-understanding. Works such as Tantra Illuminated, The Recognition Sutras, and The Doctrine of Vibration may offer insights and practices that deepen the understanding that intuitive wisdom is a natural movement of the consciousness that you already are.

    4. 1-to-1 Coaching

Personal guidance aimed to support you in feeling Self-empowered to navigate patterns and contractions that limit the perception of and trust in your inner knowing, deepening a recognition of our inner truth. An experienced guide may serve as a mirror and offer practices and reflections that may help you gently dissolve the contractions that obscure the natural clarity of your inner knowing.

    Closing Reflection

We suggest that Intuition and Inner Knowing, inspired by Kashmir Shaivism, arise naturally when the Third Eye Chakra is free from the veils that obscure its innate clarity. When we trust it, follow it, and refine our ability to hear it, we may discover that the wisdom we were seeking was already here, speaking quietly from the center of our being.
