Solar Plexus Chakra: Self-Image and Assertiveness

A Kashmir Shaivism Perspective on Inner Worth, Authentic Expression, and the Power of Being

    8 min readSelf-Image & Assertiveness

In the classical chakra system, the Solar Plexus Chakra governs Self-worth, personal identity, confidence, and the ability to assert oneself. It is seen as the center of personal power, where we learn to stand up for our Self, and where we cultivate our Self-worth and our ability to take action in life. Yet when viewed through the lens of Kashmir Shaivism, this center may be seen in the light of the recognition of one's own essence. It becomes the place where the individual recognizes their inherent worth not as something earned, but as something that is always already present.

In the Pratyabhijñā tradition, the sense of "I" is not a psychological construct. It is the reflection of the deeper I-consciousness, the universal Self that shines through each individual. When this recognition is clear, self-image becomes grounded in truth rather than insecurity. Assertiveness becomes the natural expression of authenticity rather than a defensive posture. Boundaries become expressions of self-respect rather than walls of fear.

The Solar Plexus Chakra may hold contractions when we forget this deeper truth. When we believe that our worth depends on external validation. When we fear expressing our needs. When we collapse in the face of criticism. When we feel unworthy of receiving what we need. In this state, Self-image may become fragile, and assertiveness may become either suppressed or aggressive.

But when the Solar Plexus Chakra is aligned with the Self, inspired by the Kashmir Shaivism view, Self-image may become rooted in the recognition of one's inherent divinity. Assertiveness may become the natural expression of inner clarity. Boundaries may become effortless. Confidence may become quiet and steady. We may feel trust in our own judgment. We may stand behind our choices. We may express our needs without guilt. We may feel worthy of receiving support, love, and respect.

    The Data of Inquiry

Three Dimensions of Self-Image and Assertiveness

Your assessment responses are aimed to reveal your Solar Plexus energy state across three dimensions. These dimensions may help you understand how consciousness is currently expressing its sense of identity and inner authority through you.

Dimension One: Self-Worth and Inner Value

    Assessment questions:

    • I believe that I am valuable.
    • I feel worthy of receiving what I need.
    • I accept both my strengths and my weaknesses.
    • I acknowledge and embrace successes as well as defeats.
    • I trust my innate ability to create change.

This dimension is aimed to reflect your relationship with Self-worth. In Kashmir Shaivism, worth is not something you earn. It is seen as inherent in your nature as consciousness. As Mark Dyczkowski emphasizes in The Doctrine of Vibration, the absolute is all embracing fullness (pūrṇatā). And as Christopher Wallis describes in Tantra Illuminated: "You are not only a part of the whole, you are the whole. Realizing this brings the experience of joyous freedom because you perceive yourself as complete." So we see fullness, wholeness and perfection in its essence. When this recognition is clear, Self-worth may become stable and unconditional.

When this dimension is strong, you feel valuable without needing external validation. You can receive support without guilt. You can acknowledge your strengths without arrogance and your weaknesses without shame. You trust your ability to create change because you trust the deeper intelligence that moves through you.

When this dimension is weak, self-worth may become fragile. You may feel unworthy of receiving. You may dismiss your successes. You may collapse in the face of criticism. You may doubt your ability to influence your life.

    Dimension Two: Assertiveness and Boundaries

    Assessment questions:

    • I dare to express my needs and desires.
    • I dare to set boundaries.
    • I honor my space without feeling guilty.
    • I dare to say no when something does not feel right for me.
    • I stand up for myself in conflict situations.
    • I fully stand behind the choices I make.

This dimension is aimed to reveal your relationship with assertiveness and boundaries. Aligning with the Kashmir Shaivism view, we suggest that assertiveness is a natural expression of authenticity and the recognition that you are safe to express boundaries. A willingness to align with your inner truth, with maintaining boundaries as a way to honor this alignment and as expressions of Self-respect.

When this dimension is strong, you can express your needs clearly. You can say no without guilt. You can stand up for yourself without aggression. You can hold your space with dignity. You can make choices and stand behind them.

When this dimension is weak, you may suppress your needs. You may fear disappointing others. You may struggle to say no. You may collapse in conflict. You may feel guilty for taking up space.

    Dimension Three: Confidence and Resilience

    Assessment questions:

    • I can receive criticism without feeling attacked.
    • I remain calm and confident in challenging situations.
    • I take responsibility for my own actions.
    • I dare to take conscious risks in my life.
    • I trust my own judgment and do not get lost in others' opinions.

This dimension reflects your relationship with confidence and resilience. Inspired by Kashmir Shaivism, we suggest that confidence arises from the recognition of the deeper Self. We do not see confidence as bravado or performance-based. We see it as the quiet stability and Self-trust that comes from knowing who you are.

When this dimension is strong, you can receive criticism without collapsing. You can remain steady in difficulty. You can take responsibility without shame. You can take risks because you trust your inner compass. You can listen to others without losing yourself.

When this dimension is weak, criticism may feel like an attack. Challenges may feel overwhelming. Responsibility may feel heavy. Risks may feel dangerous. Other people's opinions may feel more real than your own.

    Philosophical Introduction

Self-Image as the Reflection of the Deeper Self

In the texts translated by Mark Dyczkowski, Christopher Wallis and Jaideva Singh, the individual self is described as an expression of the universal Self. The sense of "I" is not seen as separate from the deeper I-consciousness. We may see it as a wave of the same ocean. According to this view, when this recognition is clear, Self-image becomes grounded in truth rather than insecurity.

We see the Solar Plexus Chakra as the energetic center where this recognition becomes embodied into action, where we deepen our ability to stand in our truth. It is where we remember our inherent worth. It is where we find the inner strength to express ourselves authentically. It is where we align personal identity and especially our personal will, with the deeper Self.

Practical Supportive Suggestions for Self-Image and Assertiveness

These practices may be of support in helping you reconnect with your inherent worth and express your truth with clarity.

    1. The Worthiness Breath

Place your hand on your Solar Plexus. Inhale gently while saying inwardly: "I am worthy" or "I recognize my worth." Exhale while softening your belly. This practice may help dissolve the contraction of unworthiness.

    2. Boundary-Setting Practice

Practicing saying no may be of support when it feels challenging to set boundaries. We suggest practicing boundary-setting in a clear, kind manner without over-explaining. A suggested core structure:

    1. Appreciation: Acknowledge
    2. Boundary: State your boundary
    3. Optional Softener: Close with warmth

Example phrases: "Thank you for the invitation. I am not available for that right now." / "Thank you for thinking of me. My priorities are elsewhere at the moment." / "Thank you for the invitation. It doesn't feel aligned for me right now."

We suggest you do not need to justify or explain. This may be of support in strengthening your ability to set boundaries with clarity.

    3. The Self-Acknowledgment Ritual

Each evening, write down one thing you may acknowledge yourself for. This practice may help in dissolving the habit of only focusing on what you feel is missing and help in acknowledging what is already present.

    4. Centering Responses in Conflict

It may be of support to have a few responses ready for personal conflict situations. When you feel that a conversation is starting to get heated, we suggest you may take a pause internally. This may help you respond from clarity rather than reactivity. A suggestion for responding:

    1. Acknowledge: "I hear you" or "I see you"
    2. Appreciate: "Thank you for sharing your perspective"
    3. Give yourself breathing room: "I will let it sit for some time to contemplate and come back to you"

    Addressing the Root Cause

The Veils Behind Solar Plexus Contraction

In Tantra Illuminated, Christopher Wallis writes that the three malas veil the recognition of our inherent wholeness. When the malas are active, we may forget our inherent worth. We identify with limitation. We may believe we are small, fragile, or incomplete. This forgetfulness may distort self-image and weaken assertiveness.

Āṇava-Mala: Impurity of Individuality, which may cause a limited perception of our wholeness

This veil may create an experience in which we perceive limited inherent worth and limited safety to express ourselves authentically. Our natural Self-worth may not feel recognized as something inherent to our essence nature.

Māyīya-Mala: Impurity of Differentiation, which may cause a limited perception of our underlying unity

This veil may create an experience in which we perceive limited freedom from the opinions of others. Our Self-image may not feel grounded in inner recognition, and may feel dependent on how others see us.

Kārma-Mala: Impurity of Action, which may cause a limited perception of the auspicious unfolding

This veil may create an experience in which we perceive limited freedom to act from authenticity. Expressing our truth may feel challenging when we may not trust the auspicious unfolding of simply being ourselves.

These patterns are misalignments with our essence nature, waiting to be recognized and dissolved.
